Mesh networking the acreage
Getting usable signal to the shop without trenching fibre through frozen clay: hops, haywire, and one very load-bearing tree.
Matteson Machielse
written from the rack room
The shop is 140 metres from the house, and trenching fibre through frozen clay is a July problem at best. The interim answer is a two-hop mesh with one antenna hose-clamped to a spruce that has become, functionally, network infrastructure.
Throughput is honest-fifty megabits in rain and about double that in clear air. Enough for camera feeds and the shop dashboard, which is all the shop has ever asked for.
